England moved to within three points of next year's World Cup finals by crushing Andorra 6-0 on Wednesday to win their seventh successive Group Six qualifier. Two goals each from Wayne Rooney and Jermain Defoe and one from Frank Lampard and Peter Crouch preserved England's perfect qualifying record under coach Fabio Capello and lifted them 10 points clear at the top of the group.
Capello gave David Beckham his 100th international start in midfield and he was allowed space to dictate the game which England won at a canter after Rooney opened the scoring with a fourth-minute header.
Lampard and Rooney struck before halftime when Rooney made way for Defoe, who scored twice in two minutes in the final quarter with Crouch adding a sixth as Andorra wilted.
The visitors did not have a serious attempt on goal in the match.
Europe's nine group winners qualify automatically for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with the eight best runners-up going through to the playoffs. |

Frank Lampard has revealed his desire to enter football management after taking inspiration from the likes of Jose Mourinho, Fabio Capello and Guus Hiddink. The England and Chelsea midfielder had originally intended to quit football after eventually hanging up his boots. But Lampard admitted he has found a renewed appetite to remain part of the game further down the line when his distinguished playing career comes to an end.
"I will take my coaching badges at some stage to be in a position where it (management) is a big possibility for me," said Lampard. "I would love to work with players when I eventually stop playing."
He added: "It is true that a few years ago I didn't feel like going into the management side of things once I stopped playing. I was thinking more along the lines of getting away from football.
"But now I am a bit older. I look at younger players and I've worked with so many good managers, and it gives you the taste to maybe get involved." |

England's 7,000-mile round journey to Kazakhstan produced an emphatic 4-0 victory on Saturday to leave Fabio Capello's side in sight of qualifying for next year's World Cup finals in South Africa. The trip was ultimately a comfortable one although England endured a scary ride before goals from Gareth Barry and Emile Heskey just before halftime settled their nerves.
A 2-0 interval lead flattered the visitors but they improved after the break with Wayne Rooney's hooked shot and Frank Lampard's penalty finishing off their lowly-ranked opponents who arguably played the game's better football.
England's victory means they have won six out of six in Group Six, topping the table comfortably with 18 points from Croatia (11), Belarus (9) and Ukraine (8).
Victory over the group's whipping boys Andorra at Wembley on Wednesday will sign off an encouraging season for Capello's England before they return in the autumn to put what they hope will be the finishing touches to their qualification campaign with games against Croatia, Ukraine and Belarus.
"It wasn't easy to play here, the pitch wasn't fast like English pitches and it made passing very hard," Capello told Setanta Sport.
"They started strong, pressed a lot, and for us it was difficult, but that's sometimes what happens when you play against a team who aren't at the same level. It's another big step forward to qualification." |
